Synology Diskstation DS416 Review – Is it worth the money?

Synology Diskstation DS416 is the latest 4 bay NAS designed for home users or small companies. It doesn’t have all the features that the improved DS415+ have, but are still an advanced NAS made for most users.

Synology Diskstation DS416 have DSM 6 that is the latest operating system from Synology and have many features and application. For a full list, you can take a look below Packages in Download center for DS416.

You can read the post about tool-less installation for more information, but what is especially for DS416 is you have the remove the front cover to gain access to the hard disk trays. To take out the tray you pull a lash upwards and pull the handle. You reverse the operation after you have installed the hard disks.

Good value for your money

Synology Diskstation DS416 have an  Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-212 dual-core 1.4GHz CPU with hardware encryption engine. This is not the most powerful CPU, but it’s capable of handling most of your tasks. As an unencrypted file server, it’s one of the best diskstation from Synology, with encrypted folders the performance drop a bit compared the other diskstation with more powerful encryption engine. DS416 is equipped with 1GB ram and two ethernet ports that support failover and link aggregation. As a bonus, it’s also installed a USB 3.0 port at the front for easy access. What DS416 don’t support is transcoding of high-resolution videos.

Easy backup solution

With Synology Diskstation DS416 and DSM 6, you have an easy backup and sync solutions and you can backup photos from your smartphone and tablets. With a 4 bay NAS you have up to 32 TB internal storage (8 TB x 4 HDD) that should be enough for most users.

Customer Reviews and Scores

I found two customer reviews at the time of writing and they awarded Synology Diskstation DS416 4.0 stars out of a possible 5 on average.

The customer reviews on Amazon are positive overall. The diskstation is new and with only two customer reviews it is still early. The complaint is:

Not entirely certain on this device yet. Working with Synology to figure out why my data transfers are soooo slow.

Since this is not a complaint I have seen so much on other devices I think this will improve to the customer or he has issues with other devices. I don’t see why this diskstation should have bad transfer and others not.

The other review on is:

Just awesome. Can’t say enough good things about this one, being my 3rd NAS in 10 years. After having a Seagate 4 bay die after only two years, I went with the Synology which seems to be a market leader. Great app functionality like media streaming and openvpn, Android/iOS app integration, etc. Only complaint would be very slow response to disk hibernation, but that may be eco-friendly hard drive related as well.

The last review is more like others on on other models from Synology. For reviews, it’s still a bit early.

Synology DiskstationĀ DS416 is designed for home users and small companies and offer you a NAS with many features and high performance for its value. DS416 is a good all around NAS with good storage capacity, features rich and a good media server. If you want a great media station or a top-end NAS you need to look at the specialized NAS.
